As we prepare to begin fasting this Ramadan, we are reminded of a simple truth:
Water is a blessing.
But in Garissa County, Kenya. Water is not easily found…
Temperatures soar above 40°C.
Drought stretches for months.
The land cracks beneath relentless heat.
For families here, the search for water means walking for hours under the blazing sun, often while fasting and often with children beside them or curled up on their backs because the floor feels like it’s on fire.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever relieves the hardship of a believer in this world, Allah will relieve his hardship on the Day of Resurrection.” – SÌ£ahÌ£iÌ„hÌ£ Muslim 2699
Mothers carry heavy containers across dry earth, and some heavily pregnant or ill.
Children spend more time fetching water than they do attending school to gain an education.
When local water sources dry up, some families are forced to collect water from unsafe rivers and open lakes nearby, waters that are contaminated and, in some areas, inhabited by crocodiles.
Imagine sending your child to collect water not only under scorching heat, but near dangerous waters. It’s a sight unimaginable let alone a thought.
